Don’t Ignore These Discs on Sprinkler Risers—They Could Save Your Property
Ever walked past a sprinkler riser and noticed a small, round metal disc hanging from it?
They’re called cutout discs, and while they might look like simple scraps, they actually play a vital role in keeping your fire suppression system—and your property—safe.
Why Cutout Discs Matter
When sprinkler pipe-fitters modify a system—say, to add a fitting or extend a line—they have to cut into existing piping. The piece of pipe that gets cut out poses a hidden risk. If it accidentally falls into the system and goes unnoticed, it can cause a partial or total blockage, restricting water flow during a fire. That’s a serious hazard.
To prevent this, many fitters follow a smart safety practice: they hang the retrieved cutout disc on the riser. This simple step shows they’ve accounted for that removed piece, helping to ensure the system is free of obstructions. It’s a small detail that can make a big difference.
NFPA 13 (2010 Edition), a key standard referenced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), even highlights this process. Figure 24.1 includes a specific note about verifying whether cutout discs were retrieved—because yes, it’s that important.
Sprinkler Systems & Water Damage: What You Should Know
Here’s the catch: even a fully functioning sprinkler system can result in significant water damage if it activates unnecessarily or malfunctions. At Tri State Restorations, we’ve seen firsthand how even a minor system issue—like a stuck valve or burst pipe—can flood commercial spaces, homes, or multi-family buildings in minutes.
To protect your property:
- Regularly inspect sprinkler systems and look for loose or dangling parts.
- Verify that pipe-fitters are using best practices, like retrieving and displaying cutout discs.
- Know where your shut-off valves are in case of accidental discharge.
- Have a restoration plan in place, just in case.
If your property experiences water damage from a sprinkler activation, Tri State Restorations is here to help. Our rapid response teams specialize in water extraction, structural drying, and mold prevention—restoring your space quickly and thoroughly.
